Rafting participantsThe Community Based Activity Program (CBAP), providing inclusive educational and recreational services, has grown from 16 participants at its inception in 1990, to over 2100 participants this past year. Truly a community organization, it was formed by a group of parents and teachers to address the need for a summer program for children with disabilities. Since that time, the Community Based Activity Program has expanded to include Adventures Without Limits (AWL) and the Social and Recreational Companion (SRC) Program. Since 1995, Adventures Without Limits has offered year round outdoor-adventure education programs for the entire community, including people of all ages, incomes, and ability levels. Demand for Adventures Without Limits programs has increased significantly over the past few years. In fact, since 1998 our contract services have increased ten fold and open enrollment trips have increased 39 percent. The Social/Recreational Companion Program has provided one-on-one staff support for individuals with disabilities who want to take part in community activities since 2001.

CBAP staff and participantCommunity Based Activity Program's goal of providing educational and recreational services to people who could not otherwise access them, has expanded from its original focus (serving people with disabilities) to include service for low income and at risk groups where cost is the barrier to participation. Adventures Without Limits provides custom-designed programs for a variety of schools and service agencies, including the Morrison Center (supporting youth with emotional and behavioral disabilities), New Avenues for Youth (homeless youth center), Gales Creek Elementary, and Portland Parks & Recreation (Disabled Citizens Recreation) to name a few. Following an Adventures Without Limits trip, the Morrison Center wrote, "We are truly lucky to have Adventures Without Limits as a resource in support of children and families and I would freely recommend them to other providers in the community."
