Volunteer Trip Leader

Social/Recreational Companion
Adventures Without Limits (AWL) is a nonprofit organization that takes an integrated approach to recreation by combining participants with and without disabilities in adventure-based programs. Adventures Without Limits' mission is to empower people of all ages and abilities through quality outdoor programs, which include, Sea Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Canoeing, Camping, Cross-Country Skiing, Snowshoeing and White-Water Rafting.

Amy on belayThanks to a grant from Washington County, Adventures Without Limits has begun a new project to increase recreational opportunities for people with disabilities. More specifically, Adventures Without Limits has hired and trained staff to support individuals with disabilities in recreational programs. Social/Recreational Companions (SRC) services may also be contracted by individuals who want increased social and recreational opportunities for themselves or for a family member. They can contact Adventures Without Limits directly or go through other service organizations such as, Self-Determination Resources Inc., Independent Living Resources, or the ARC.

The goal of this project is to encourage independence and healthy lifestyles by providing needed support to individuals with disabilities who want to participate in recreational activities. Some may choose to work-out at a Fitness Club, or learn how to snowboard, or swim; others may want to sign up for an organized recreational program such as a Tae Kwon Do class or a Sea Kayaking trip. Whatever the activity, Social/Recreational Companions will ensure that the person they are working with has an enjoyable and empowering experience.

Social/Recreational Companions have the opportunity to work with a variety of people in diverse settings. More importantly, through these experiences they will have the chance to positively impact a life — maybe their own. There are several Social/Recreational Companions Volunteer positions available, and limited paid positions. Social/Recreational Companions may work within organized recreation programs throughout Washington and Multnomah Counties CBAP canoeing participants(i.e. Park and Recreation Districts, the Special Olympics, and Adventures Without Limits) or they may support individuals pursuing other recreational interests (i.e. swimming, bowling, and hiking). Social/Recreational Companions' work schedules will be very flexible, and the pay scale will vary depending upon experience and commitment.

Please spread the word about new job opportunities for Social/Recreational Companions, and increased recreational opportunities for people with disabilities. Questions about the Social/Recreational Companions project can be directed to Amanda Wriggins at amanda@awloutdoors.com, or (503) 359-2568.

That means You will assist with safety, risk management, driving to and from the destination, supporting volunteers, preparing all equipment needed for the trip, teaching all aspects of our outdoor education curriculum, making sure all participants are performing up to their potential, and anything else involved in leading outdoor trips. A typical trip includes about eight participants of varying ability, an assistant trip leader and two to four volunteers.
